I only recently overcame this fear by buying a nice-ish fountain pen (kaweco sport steel) I really wanted to use and starting with a field notes that got leaked on by some hand sanitizer wipes in my bag. it was a perfect “well it’s already ruined, so I can’t make it any worse” situation and it totally worked.
